PHOTOS: Nevada Co. man caught trying to sell bear cubs

NEVADA COUNTY, CA- The Department of Fish and Game is investigating how a man in Nevada County came into possession of two bear cubs.

According to Department of Fish and Game, the man had the cubs at a gas station in North San Juan, and was offering them for sale, as someone might sell puppies or kittens.

While a crowd of people gathered and took pictures of the cubs, one person called the Department of Fish and Game Poacher hotline to alert authorities.

By the time game wardens arrived, the man had left the scene. However, he was well known in the community and later contacted at his home.

No arrests were made, but game wardens removed the cubs from his home and took them to their regional office in Rancho Cordova. Plans are to transfer the cubs to a wildlife rehabilitation center in South Lake Tahoe.

PHOTOS: Bodie on the mend

SACRAMENTO, CA - New pictures of Bodie, the Sacramento police K-9 shot twice last Friday by a car thief suspect, were made available Wednesday.

The 3-year-old German shepherd is recovering from a broken jaw, severely cut tongue and a shattered paw. He had a tracheotomy to help him breathe because his tongue was so swollen from the trauma and there is a cast on his leg. He has had several surgeries, including one Tuesday to remove bullet fragments.

Veterinarians said several days ago Bodie had a 50 percent chance of returning to work and it would be at least three months from now in a best-case scenario.

K-9 handler Gary Dahl  is familiar with Bodie's road to recovery road. His dog Bandit was shot in the neck two years ago while blocking the escape of an alleged robber. The bullet traveled through Bandit's body, missing vital organs. He was back on the streets doing  police work after surgery and five weeks of recovery.

Calif. gang member gets 6 years for stealing girl's puppy

POMONA, CA (AP) - A Southern California gang member has been sentenced to six years in prison for stealing a 9-year-old girl's
puppy.

Los Angeles County sheriff's investigators say 26-year-old Jose Castrejon grabbed the leashed puppy while the girl waited for her uncle outside a market in the community of Bassett on in April 2010.

Store surveillance video shows the girl clutching the leash and sliding across the sidewalk before she finally let go.

Castrejon got into his truck and drove away with the dog.

He was arrested the following day and the pit bull named Mia was returned to the girl.

Castrejon was convicted of robbery and a Pomona judge sentenced him on Feb. 1.
