5 Ways to Help Your Child Make a Successful Transition to College

Getting ready to send your child away to college is a huge undertaking for your mind, body, and bank account. Yet, naturally, many parents spend more time worrying about how their children will handle the transition. Here are a few valuable things to keep in mind to help your teen successfully make the move to college life:

1. Utilize College Resources

Most universities have online information for future students and parents that provides great resources for acclimating to campus life; explore these together and discuss what you see. Also, take advantage of college visits and orientations so your child can interact with advisors and other prospective students.

2. Teach the Basics

One of the easiest ways to help your child prepare for college is to ensure he knows fundamental survival skills: cooking, cleaning, and washing laundry. Teach him a few simple cooking techniques or recipes before he leaves home. Ensure he understands how to sort, wash, dry, fold, and put away (that’s the tricky one) his own laundry. And provide him with a few cleaning supplies to encourage at least somewhat sanitary living conditions.

3. Give a Lesson on Money Management
