VSP Vision Care sends mobile eye clinic to areas devastated by tornado

RANCHO CORDOVA - VSP® Vision Care deployed a state-of-the-art 45-foot mobile eye exam clinic to the affected areas of Tuscaloosa, Ala. and surrounding areas to provide no-cost comprehensive eye exams and eyewear to the families and children in need.

To date, working with the local American Red Cross chapters and the University of Alabama School of Optometry (UAB), VSP has directly helped over 1,000 tornado victims regain their sight after losing or breaking their glasses. Students and doctors from the UAB are donating their time and services to work on board the clinic. VSP has also provided the American Red Cross with 3,000 gift certificates, valued at $1.15 million, to distribute to Red Cross clients in need across all of the areas affected by tornadoes or flooding . The gift certificates are redeemable at local VSP doctors offices and include a comprehensive eye exam and eyewear.

"As a company committed to giving back to the communities in which we live and work, VSP is committed to helping families begin the rebuilding process by simply taking care of their eyes and protecting their vision for the long road ahead," said Rob Lynch, president and CEO, VSP Global. "The VSP Mobile Eyes® program was created for disaster relief to ensure our VSP doctors have an opportunity to continue providing critical care in a time of need."

The mobile eye clinic, created in partnership with Transitions Optical, offers a state-of-the-art exam room, dispensary and in-office finishing lab allowing glasses to be made on-site. UAB has also provided portable ophthalmic equipment for multiple patients to be seen at once.

During a natural disaster, especially with a tornado, glasses are easily lost or broken. The services that VSP Vision Care, and their doctors, provide to those affected by disaster, free of charge, are filling an important immediate need for so many people," stated Ann Kaguyutan, Director of Disaster Fundraising at the American Red Cross. "Whether individuals are seen on the deployable mobile clinic within their community or they receive a VSP gift certificate from a local Red Cross chapter, VSP has helped to restore hope to the people who have been so deeply affected."
