7 self-awareness questions to aid student success
7 self-awareness questions to aid student success

With the 2016-2017 school year upon us, preparing our students to start off strong is a necessity that must not be overlooked. School supplies and school clothes are definitely great but if we neglect to help our students become more self-aware, we'll be making a tragic mistake. Business genius, Gary Vaynerchuk says, "Self-Awareness is the game...when you know yourself, you win". I like to say, "When you know yourself, success is more easily attained. As the father of a 1st grader, 8th grader and 9th grader, I desire for my children to be successful. As the oldest of 7 brothers and sisters, I want my younger siblings to be successful. As a #StudentSuccessCoach of 15 years, it is a need for me to see our students start this year off with more confidence than ever before and be extremely successful. For this very reason, I've compiled 7 questions that we can ask our students to help them become more self-aware. (The questions are below, in no particular order)

  • Do you frequently think about what is important to you in your life, and spend time trying to achieve those things?
  • If somone asked you to list three of your best qualities, would you be able to do it easily?
  • Is it easy for you to identify things about yourself that you need to improve on?
  • Do you ask people whom you trust to give you honest feedback on your attitudes and behaviors?
  • Generally, do you feel secure and confident about the decisions that you make for your life?
  • When you are in an argument, do you try to see the other person's point of view?
  • When things go wrong for you, do you look at how you may have contributed to the problems?

These 7 "yes or no" questions should be followed up with a creative open-ended question or a simple "why". Be sure to select the right setting for asking these questions. The right setting can turn informative questions to transformative dialogue. So get to it! Your future you will thank you for it. Stay encouraged my friends.
