Man found guilty of stalking, assault on Sacramento court referee

SACRAMENTO, CA - A Reno man thwarted before he may have hurt the children of a Sacramento County court referee was found guilty of assault with a deadly weapon and felony stalking.

According to the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office, one of defendant John Parlante's children was ordered removed from his home in 2008 by Sacramento County Family Court Judicial Referee Daniel Horton.

Last February, Parlante's traveled Sacramento from Reno and bought an ax at a local Home Depot, per court documents. That same night, Horton reported hearing a loud banging on the front door of his Rancho Cordova home and then saw someone get in a car parked on his street and drive away.

The next morning, Sacramento police Det. Darby Lannom testified he went to Horton's home to help serve a search warrant on an unrelated case when he observed Parlante drive up to the judical referee's home, get out of his van with an ax in hand and walk around the residence before getting back in his van.

Lannom said he then saw Parlante following Horton's wife as she drove away but then come back.

Two of Horton's children then left the house and got into a truck in the driveway. That is when Parlante, according to Lannom, got in his van, accelerated and headed for the truck, stopping just a few feet away. As Parlante got out of his van, Lannon ran toward him, ordering him to the ground.

Sheriff investigators searched Parlante's van and reported finding the ax, current newspaper clippings mentioning Horton and court proceeding documents involving Parlante's 2008 case.
