SACRAMENTO, CA -  A huge crowd of 28,000 was expected to march to the State Capitol in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King on Monday.

In addition to the march honoring King's life and legacy, the goal is to also raise awareness for a fundraising campaign to eliminate the academic and opportunity achievement gap; the gap that still exists between poor and minority students compared to white students.

MLK365 Director Sam Starks says with previous marches, the focus has been on the past. This one is focused on the future and creating educational opportunities for all children to thrive.

Starks reminded that this year, 1.3 million students will drop out of school. That's one student dropping out every 26 seconds, and he says the majority of them will be poor and minority students.

Regina Brooks, who has participated in the march for several years, said she believes it is important to "honor his [King's] life, his memory, to keep moving forward and to never forget."

"It's a great teaching tool," Brooks added.

The marchers  converged at the State Capitol and then moved on to Sacramento Convention Center where a variety of performances and panel discussions were scheduled.
