If your child were choking, would you know what to do?

If your child were choking, would you know what to do?

A friend of mine recently reminded me how quickly and easily it is for children under the age of 4 to choke. She had quite the scare the other night with her 3 year old when he began choking on a piece of hard candy. He panicked. She panicked. They called 911 and made a late night trip to the ER.

Luckily, after some forceful coughing, he swallowed the candy and was back to his energetic, playful self once he recovered from the emotional trauma.

Nothing is as fear provoking or stressful as watching your young child in distress, choking, struggling to breathe, and wondering if you’re doing the right thing. This post, by Dr. Natasha Burgert, comes quickly to mind as she eloquently describes the seconds of sheer panic when she witnesses her son choking on a piece of food. Dr.Moms are not immune to freaking out either. When it comes to our own children, we are in full mom mode.

Physical fitness trumps body weight in reducing death risks

Physical fitness trumps body weight in reducing death risks

If you maintain or improve your fitness level — even if your body weight has not changed or increased — you can reduce your risk of death, according to research reported in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association.

In a study of 14,345 adult men, mostly white and middle or upper class, researchers found that:

Get Healthy, Get Declined

Get Healthy, Get Declined

Recently I was working with a 48 year old woman, Leslie, transitioning from a group to an individual plan. She applied to two different carriers and was declined by both. One of the insurers was her current group health plan carrier. My client takes two medications, one for high blood pressure and another for depression. The mild anti-depressant is reasonable and temporary since she is going through a divorce. She exercises daily, height-weight proportional and does not smoke or drink. “Why are you declining her?”, I growl as I read the e-mail notification.

COBRA coverage will be available to her but that is expensive and she is trying to save a little money now that she is single and living alone. Since I had other clients with far heavier medications and issues get underwritten for health insurance, I never gave it a thought that she would be declined, twice!

Fishy suggestion to lower cholesterol

Fishy suggestion to lower cholesterol

At my last doctor’s appointment, for a totally unrelated condition, my physician noticed that my cholesterol is persistently high. I have known that my cholesterol hovers around 200 – 240 points for the last 15 years. In an effort to reduce the evil number, I have increased my exercise, virtually given up red meat, increased fruits and veggies and have switched to soy butter and soy milk. All of my efforts have been rewarded with continuously high numbers. It really takes a toll on my self-esteem; another failed test.

However, without prompting, the doctor I was seeing asked if I would be willing to try some supplements to help reduce the cholesterol number. “What?”, I thought, “A doc that was not pushing an overpriced prescription pharmaceutical on an old white guy with health insurance?. This is new.”

She suggested I try a combo of fish oil and red yeast rice tablets.

West Nile Virus Activity Increases as More Bird and Mosquito Samples Test Positive in Sacramento

Elk Grove, Calif.— The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito &Vector Control District announced that further evidence of West Nile virus activity has been detected in Sacramento County as two more mosquito samples and seven bird tested positive. Most of the mosquito samples and birds have been collected in south Sacramento County in the communities of Wilton and Elk Grove, but evidence of WNV activity has also been found in Sacramento and Citrus Heights. “The cooler weather we have had this year probably explains our relatively low numbers of infected mosquito samples and birds compared to previous years, but residents still need to be aware that West Nile virus is a threat,” said David Brown, District Manager. “Hot temperatures can quickly amplify the virus.
