Payroll tax cuts start Friday

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The White House administration says Americans will start seeing the benefits of the payroll tax cut that President Obama signed into law in their paychecks starting Friday.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner says the 2 percent decrease in the payroll tax will benefit more than 150 million families. He said the average worker will see take-home pay increase by about $700 a year as a result.

The White House said the cuts will provide a boost to the economy and job growth this year.

The tax cut was included in a deal Obama struck with Republicans to extend Bush-era income tax cuts for all workers. An extension of unemployment benefits was also included in the deal.

Victoria's Secret 2010 Fashion Show

SLIDESHOW: Victoria's Secret 2010 fashion show

By Andrea Mandell, USA TODAY

NEW YORK - Call it the year of the hot mommy. Behind many of the biggest names on Victoria's Secret's supersized catwalk Wednesday night was a pint-sized tot, waiting at home.

"There are so many girls who have babies," said Alessandra Ambrosio, 29, backstage before the fashion show, not yet changed into the pink silk robe and flip-flops handed to all the models. Her daughter Anja, 2, is starting to recognize Mom's work. "If I show her a Victoria's Secret catalogue or a campaign, she will know which one is me," she said proudly. "And she poses already."

Sacramento sheriff: Suspect nabbed in rash of armed robberies

SACRAMENTO COUNTY, CA - A day after releasing store surveillance photos of a suspected robber, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department says an arrest has been made in the series of armed robberies.

Deputy Jason Ramos said the Sacramento Violent Crimes Task Force took Marcello Pinkney, 43, into custody in connection with four of the crimes.

The robber's targets have been gas stations and convenience stores, usually in the early evening. In each case, Ramos said the robber picked up merchandise, brought it to the store counter and then drew a black semi-automatic handgun on the clerk or assaulted the clerk when the register was opened. The robber demanded cash and then left.

Report projects impact of huge storm in California

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A new report details the projected impact on California if a catastrophic winter storm causes extensive flooding and landslides.

The report released Thursday by the U.S. Geological Survey creates a realistic scenario to raise questions about the ability of authorities to handle such a disaster and is to be used for preparedness.

A team of 117 researchers considered a hypothetical winter storm similar to a 45-day storm that devastated California in 1861 and 1862.

They found that such a storm could cause hundreds of landslides, flooding stretching 300 miles long in the Central Valley and serious damage in the state's major population centers.

In all, researchers estimated the losses and damages could cost on the order of $725 billion.

Owner of rescued dog says Casper is weak, but still fighting

RANCHO CORDOVA, CA - Casper, the miniature schnauzer that was pulled from a drainage pipe Wednesday night, remains under the care of a veterinarian, but his owner says the dog is a survivor.

"He's got a lot of fight in him still," said Joseph Hernandez.

Hernandez said his 15-year-old dog is dehydrated and receiving fluids intravenously. "He's weak, not ready to move around on his own," Hernandez said. But Casper's fever came down and that's a good sign.

The family believes Casper was stuck inside an 8-inch storm drain for several days.

The New Professional: Party tights and forgetting

OK, so I lied. But I didn't do it on purpose. You see, when I wrote this guest post for Classy Career Girl about a month ago, I actually wrote that I cheated three times.  However, when I went back to add links, I could only find two links. I tried and tried but could not for the life of me remember what my third cheat was. Had I counted the two pieces of my skirt suit? Unlikely. So I changed it to "twice" and linked both cheats I could remember. But the third cheat just would not get out of my mind. Had I just imagined it?

Man wanted for questioning in Rancho Cordova homicide arrested

SACRAMENTO, CA - Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies have arrested 31-year-old Demetrius Shaffer, identified as a person of interest in the strangling death of Rajneet Singh Saturday.

Sheriff's spokesman Deputy Jason Ramos said a tip lead deputies to find Shaffer at the Sacramento County Mental Health Center on Stockton Boulevard around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Shaffer was arrested for an active warrant on a previous, unrelated sexual case, said Ramos.

Investigators identifed Shaffer as a person of interest whom they wanted to question in connection to the New Year's Day murder in which 37-year-old Singh's body was found near the light rail tracks on Mills Park Drive.
