RANCHO CORDOVA, CA - A Wednesday morning crash on westbound Highway 50 between the Mather Field and Zinfindal Road exits left one man dead and his passenger with injuries, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Office Jasper Begay said the victims were in a stalled maroon Ford Tempo on the highway shoulder when their car was hit. The driver of a silver Chevrolet Tahoe was looking to the left while merging onto the highway and struck the back of the Ford.

The Ford's driver, a 54-year-old man from Carmichael, was transported to UC Davis Medical Center but didn't survive his injuries, Begay said. His passenger, a 44-year-old woman, suffered moderate injuries and was hospitalized.

The victims' names have not been released.

The SUV's driver sustained minor injuries. He was not cited at this time, Begay said. It did not appear alcohol or drugs were involved.

Demetrius Shaffer, 31, was in a Sacramento County courtroom Thursday afternoon, but charged with a different crime. According to court documents Shaffer is accused of brutally raping a woman on Thanksgiving Day in 2010.
